The Minneriya National Park is famed for its elephant gathering since its habitat contributes completely to sustain a big herd of Sri Lankan elephants. The numbers can go from 150 – 200 elephants up to 700. Throngs of tourists, local and foreign, visit the park during the season while the main habitats including scrublands, low/high canopy forests, grasslands, abandoned chena lands, wetlands and various rocky areas can be seen while on a safari at the park. The park boasts of 24 species of mammals, 160 species of birds, and many species of amphibians, reptiles, fish and butterflies.
