Locally known as wood apple (Limonia acidissima), this is a tropical fruit that is native to the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. Common names of Wood Apple also include elephant apple or monkey fruit. The fruit itself has a hard woody shelf while inside is a soft brown pulp with whitish seeds. This aromatic pulp is slightly sweet, yet very tangy that reminds you of a unique flavour that can be a mix of tamarind and mango.
Ideal for hot summer days, wood apple can be consumed in many ways. It’s usually enjoyed naturally, scooped with a spoon while you can add a bit of salt and sugar to overcome its super tangy flavour. It can also be enjoyed processed as a juice - “divul kiri” with a mix of sugar and coconut milk which is one of the most refreshing drinks that one could have. Its even made into jams, chutneys and preserves. An incredibly healthy superfood it is blessed with an abundance of fibre, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.
