It is also an important bird area in Sri Lanka while the park was initially declared to protect displaced wild animals due development projects surrounding the longest river in Sri Lanka - the Mahaweli. Belonging to the dry zone, the park is made of both dry and primary and secondary riverine forests as well as grasslands making it a feeding ground for many animals.

One of the highest rated biodiversity parks in the island, the reservoirs and forests within support a large number of flora and fauna. There are massive herds of elephants seen roaming the river areas while water buffalo, monkeys and deer are common animals to observe. A rare sighting of leopards and sloth bear would be perfect for your visit. There are hundreds of bird species with endemic resident birds making it ideal for bird watchers and nature photographers.
